How Do I Get My Energy Star Blu Ray Player to Resume With My Dvd Player Again

  • #1

Occasionally, the need arises for me to stop the thing i'm playing on my Sony BD player. However I get frustrated when I think almost every time I press "play" again to resume, it whirrs up, then begins to load from scratch, going through copyright warnings and the menu system again.

Now on every DVD player I have owned, when I hit "stop" I can simply just press "play" again, and the thing will start playing after a few seconds from the point at which I left off without any faffing about.

Is there limitation with the format, or is it my player, is this the same for everyone?

Cheers.

Ben.

It's the bluray. No resume feature is normal. Really poor omission imho.

You think it would be an easy thing to fix. Obviously not.

With HD-DVD on some discs you could bookmark any spot in a movie and then navigate back to it.

My Panasonic BD player does resume okay with DVD's but as mentioned only a very few BD's seem to support it.

Java, and all this interactive crap, absolute waste of my time.

Thankfully it can be disabled in the menu.

If a disc isn't going to resume, a bookmark feature should be a minimum requirement, it should be written into the BD spec:)

Afaik, Java cannot be disabled.

With java the player has no control. The player starts the java when the disc is inserted and it is the java programming that allows what can be done.

Universal Blu Rays have the same bookmark feature as the Universal HD-DVD's. Afaik, the bookmark only works if the disc stays in the player. I tried it and the bookmarks were gone when swapping discs.

My error, I meant BD live can be disabled.:)

I just turn off the interweb setting.

Whether a disc will resume is down to the authoring of the disc.
I have lots that start all over again from scratch if you STOP or switch the player to standby.

But I also have lots that will play from where I left it when the player is put into standby and with the PS3 it can even do it with the last few discs when they are ejected from the player.
But the Bluray discs that don't resume on a normal player won't on the PS3 either.

I have the UK Star Trek TOS season 1 and resume works on that but the US season 2 won't.

Unless you have to leave it for a long time put the disc on pause and this keeps it safely where you want it.
Some discs , Universal I think even have a screensaver that cuts in when the disc is left on pause for a while and you can return to where you were by pressing play or menu

My first run-in with BD live was with Iron Man, just a circle going around and around. I honestly thought the disc was knackered. Came onto here and lo and behold it was being discussed. 5 minutes later I was watching the film, minus the damn interweb connection.

And yes, I've never had a disc refuse to play. Albeit with the prompt asking if I want to connect to the online content.

All I want to do is to view the film I paid for.

It's been a while since I've tried it because I now use a standalone Sony BD player but I seem to recall being able to stop and resume BD movies on my PS3. In fact, I believe it even remembers where you got to if you remove the disc and insert it hours or days later...

... or maybe I imagined that?

You're not imagining it. It has a fantastic memory for remembering where you were in a movie.

The PS3 creates a save file for every film you play.I have many BDs that resume playback from the stopped position on the PS3. Even if you remove the disc from the player and put it back in at a later date it resumes. It is one feature I really miss with my BDT300. That doesn't even remember DVD stop positions if you take the disc out.

Even my 10 year old Sanyo DVD player had a resume function.

Fixed. Unfortunately. I wish it was every film, but only about 1/5 or less of the films in my collection have a save file on the ps3 :(

Avatar is a recent one that has a proper resume feature, i.e. the first thing it does when loaded is to ask if you want to resume playback (presuming you've actually watched the disc previously, natch). The only slight flaw to this is the c*nting long time it takes for the disc to load in the first place.

As for bookmarks, they'll only be retained on a player with attached/built-in flash memory AFAIK.

The spec allows for it, sure, but do they HAVE to have memory built-in? If that was the case then surely Sony wouldn't have bundled 1GB memory cards with their first profile 2.0 player (BDPS550).

Sin City does that and i'm sure i've got some others...... just trying to remember........

nw, the all-seeing Wiki sez that the required memory for 1.1 and 2.0 can be built-in OR removeable. Seems to be the case with most manufacturers that they leave it to the customer to sort out the local storage. But as long as people got something then their players will remember bookmarks. My current Sony S470 won't store any bookmarks (and won't even spin certain titles) without flash memory attached.

Yes it does - as I stated just a couple of posts above yours

I only quickly skipped through the posts so I missed that. Sorry.
